Richard & Mae Smethurst
our Patient of the Month

Richard and Mae Smethurst have been patients in the office for over 15 years. In fact, Mae went to high school with Dr. Werrin, but they didn’t know each other! We would like to introduce you to our first “patients of the month”!
Richard and Mae Smethurst were married in December 1956, and they will celebrate their 48th wedding anniversary at the end of this year. Congratulations!
Soon after their wedding their love of travel sent them to Japan to live and work for 1 ½ years. She was a teacher and he was a 1st Lieutenant. They have returned to Japan every year since.
In 1968, they both attended the University of Michigan to pursue PhD’s. Mae’s is in Ancient Greek Drama and Richard’s is in Japanese History. Soon after, they both landed jobs at the University of Pittsburgh as professors, where they have been ever since!
Both Mae and Richard are visiting professors at Keio University in Japan, and in 2000, were invited to be professors at the Chinese University in Hong Kong. |
