Post-Treatment Instructions Following Implant Surgery

Some post-treatment discomfort and swelling is to be expected following dental implant surgery. In most cases, there should be minimal discomfort. We recommend following these instructions. If excessive pain, swelling or bleeding occur, call the office at 412.621.0200 There is no need for continual discomfort. You have made a wise choice in accepting implant therapy. Soon you will reap the benefits of this decision.

  1. An ice pack should be applied intermittently [45 minutes on, 15 minutes off] on the jaw at the site of the implant(s) surgery area for 4-6 hours after surgery. Note: Continuous application of an ice pack may cause frostbite.
  2. Please call out office if there is any question in you mind about anything as to your recovery. If after office hours, call 412.621.0200.
  3. There should be minimal bleeding post-treatment. Usually, the bleeding can be controlled by application of pressure using gauze, cloth or a moistened tea bag. Place gauze squares over the area and apply finger pressure or bite down for 30 minutes or so. If excessive bleeding should occur, call the office or the emergency pager number after hours. In the unlikely event there is profuse bleeding and there is no one available, go to the emergency room of a nearby hospital.
  4. Pain Relievers – Advil (3 tablets) is the best medication for oral pain If you prefer another analgesic, take what works best for you. If there is excessive pain and the analgesic does not help, call us.
  5. Oral Hygiene – During the week following surgery, all oral hygiene measures should be maintained If the implant is exposed and visible, the top of the implant should NOT be brushed until the incision lines heal, which is usually about two weeks after surgery. The mouthwash of choice is what we have prescribed for you, Colgate’s PerioGuard. Do not dilute PerioGuard or drink water for one hour after rinsing with PerioGuard.
  6. In some cases an antibiotic has been prescribed. This medication will inhibit the growth of bacteria in the mouth and keep the mouth clean during the healing period. If side effects occur, such as an upset stomach, a rash or itching, discontinue the antibiotic and call us.
